Mind Engineer

Many people suddenly feel chest discomfort, fast heartbeat, sweating, breathing difficulty or fear and immediately think:

“Am I getting a heart attack?”

This fear is called Cardiophobia or heart attack fear. Recently, I did a video about this topic and received a huge number of consultations and messages. One major realisation was this: a large number of people silently suffer from this problem at home.

Many people asked whether there is any simple heart attack fear solution they can try during panic episodes. For temporary emotional relief, I developed a method called RETRACE – Reverse Fear Tracing Affirmations.

The printable English and Malayalam versions are available on the website.

What is Cardiophobia?

Cardiophobia is an intense fear about heart-related problems. A person becomes highly sensitive to body sensations like:

  • Fast heartbeat
  • Chest tightness
  • Sweating
  • Increased breathing rate
  • Dizziness
  • Weakness
  • Fear of collapse or death

Even normal anxiety symptoms can feel dangerous. The mind starts scanning the body continuously for signs of a heart attack.

Why Does Heart Attack Fear Happen?

Most people with cardiophobia become trapped in a fear cycle.

It usually works like this:

Small body sensation → Fear thought → More anxiety → Stronger symptoms → More fear

For example, a slightly fast heartbeat after stress or caffeine may trigger the thought:

“Is this a heart attack?”

That fear increases adrenaline in the body. Then heartbeat, sweating and breathing increase further. The person becomes more frightened and starts checking symptoms again and again.

This cycle creates panic.

RETRACE: A Simple Heart Attack Fear Solution

The RETRACE method uses forward and reverse affirmations to slowly move the mind from fear to safety feelings.

The first thought in cardiophobia is usually:

“Is this a heart attack?”

The RETRACE method gradually modifies this fear into calmer and safer thoughts.

Some examples include:

  • “Maybe this is anxiety.”
  • “Anxiety can increase heartbeat.”
  • “Anxiety can create chest discomfort.”
  • “The more I fear it, the stronger it feels.”
  • “I do not need to panic now.”
  • “This feeling will slowly pass.”
  • “I have experienced this before.”
  • “My breathing and heartbeat are becoming normal.”
  • “Now I feel okay.”

More than 50% of people who tried this method reported temporary emotional relief.

How to Practice the RETRACE Method

Read all 20 affirmations slowly from top to bottom. Try to genuinely feel and understand each sentence while reading.

Immediately after finishing, read the same affirmations very fast from bottom to top without giving a gap.

Then again read slowly from top to bottom with emotional understanding.

Repeat this process until you start feeling calmer and safer.

This method combines:

  • fear interruption,
  • emotional regulation,
  • grounding,
  • cognitive calming,
  • and safety-focused thought shifting.

Important Note About Recovery

The RETRACE method can help during anxiety episodes and panic moments. However, long-term recovery from cardiophobia usually needs proper psychological consultation and deeper anxiety treatment.

If heart attack fear affects your daily life, relationships or sleep, professional help is important.

A calm mind can slowly retrain the body to feel safe again.
